Leadership is defined by Dictionary.com as “1. the position or function of a leader, a person who guides or directs a group: 2. ability to lead.”
The first part of that definition is a given. Society considers someone who holds a position of authority over others, someone who guides or directs a group, to be a leader.
Examples of people with positional authority are bosses, supervisors, managers, coaches, teachers, appointed and elected officials. You can probably think of many more.
However, of all the people who hold these positions, very few have the skill set necessary to fulfill the second half of the definition. In other words, they don’t possess the ability to lead.
Society’s idea of a “natural born leader” is actually a myth. Those that are considered to be “natural born leaders” are simply individuals who have easily and flawlessly adopted the behaviors and attributes of a leader.
These same behaviors and attributes can be learned and employed by anyone in a position of leadership. All that is required is an earnest desire to learn and the ability to put what they have learned into practice.
Leaders have followers. Followers share the leader’s vision and work together towards a common goal. Without leadership, people will obey and submit, but will not be led.
